How to connect ChatGPT to Shopify

Short answer: You need a Shopify store, an Acrium account (free for 14 days, no card) and ChatGPT Business, Enterprise or Edu for changes. Pro can only read. About five minutes. Add Acrium as a custom connector in ChatGPT, sign in, connect Shopify, then ask.

Step by step

Four steps, about five minutes.

  1. Add Acrium to ChatGPT

    On ChatGPT on the web, turn on Developer mode in settings, then add a custom MCP server (Create, or + > Add custom MCP server). Name it Acrium, paste https://acriumautomated.com/mcp and set Authentication to OAuth. ChatGPT moves these menus now and then. On Business, Enterprise or Edu, an admin may have to allow custom connectors first. The ChatGPT setup guide has the current clicks.

  2. Sign in to Acrium

    ChatGPT opens an Acrium sign-in. New here? Make an account in the same window: your first workspace gets Connect free for 14 days, no card. Then pick the workspace it may use and the permissions it gets. It never does more than you could.

  3. Connect Shopify in Acrium

    In the Acrium dashboard, sign in to your Shopify store. To attach photos, publish to sales channels or manage SKUs and orders, also tick More store & inventory tools in Settings.

  4. Try a first prompt

    Start with something small you can check. A few below.

  • “Add our lavender candle at $24 with SKU CANDLE-LAV and attach the photo from the Photos folder.”
  • “What sold this week, and what's running low in inventory?”

What ChatGPT can do in Shopify

  • Products: list them, add one with a SKU, change title, description and price, publish or unpublish, list it on the sales channel, delete.
  • Photos: attach photos from your Acrium media library, change alt text, delete images.
  • Discounts: create a percent-off code for every product (at most 25 percent off), change a price rule, delete codes.
  • Orders and reports: recent paid orders, and Shopify's saved reports where your Shopify plan allows them.
  • Inventory: Acrium keeps its own stock list matched to Shopify by SKU, with printable QR stock labels. New orders and low stock land in the attention queue ChatGPT reads.

What it can't do, or won't without you

  • It doesn't change Shopify's own stock count. Acrium's inventory is its own list, matched by SKU.
  • It doesn't reorder or restock anything.
  • On ChatGPT Pro it can only read: no new products, no edits, no discounts.
  • By default, new discounts and deletes wait for your approval in the Acrium dashboard. You can loosen that in the Approval Gate settings.

Which ChatGPT plans work (read this first)

  • Business, Enterprise, Edu: work. OpenAI currently lists full MCP support, writes included, for these plans on ChatGPT on the web. Your workspace admin may need to allow custom connectors.
  • Pro: OpenAI says Pro can connect custom MCP servers with read and fetch permissions only. ChatGPT could look things up, but not post or change anything.
  • Free, Plus, Go: OpenAI's help page doesn't list them for custom MCP servers. Don't count on it.
  • The quick test: connect Acrium, then ask ChatGPT to save a note in Acrium. If that works, changes work. If it doesn't, Claude's free plan works with the same Acrium account.

Which ChatGPT plan do I need?

OpenAI currently lists full MCP support, writes included, for Business, Enterprise and Edu on ChatGPT on the web. Pro can connect with read and fetch only, so ChatGPT could look but not change anything. If your plan can't make changes, Claude's free plan works with the same Acrium account.

Doesn't Shopify make its own ChatGPT connector?

Yes. Shopify makes its own connector apps, and if the store is all you want ChatGPT to touch, start there. Acrium is separate and not made by Shopify. It covers the store plus posting to nine social platforms, Google Ads and, on Connect + Voice, phone calls.

Will ChatGPT change my Shopify stock levels?

No. Acrium keeps its own inventory list, matched to Shopify products by SKU. It doesn't change Shopify's own stock count.
